Cimabue, the greatest painter in medieval Italy, was surprised when he discovered that a fly had landed on one of his works.“Shoo!”he shouted, but it remained still. Finally, he reached out to touch the insect. To his surprise, he found only wet paint. Actually Giotto had painted the fly when Cimabue was away, and it looked so real that Cimabue had been completely fooled.
Giotto di Bondone was born in a poor farming family. Legend has it that while he was tending goats he drew a picture on a rock and that the artist Cimabue, who happened to be passing by, saw him at work and was so impressed with the boy’s talent that he took him into his studio as an apprentice(学徒).
In the Middle Ages,an apprentice’s job was to copy his master as exactly as he could, which resulted in a distinct lack of new ideas. In fact, art in the Middle Ages seemed to have been stuck in a rut. The people in paintings didn’t look like real people, and the symbolism of art was often so remote that it must have been difficult for viewers to connect with it on a personal level. But Giotto thought art could be something more.
To accomplish this goal, Giotto adopted many techniques that were uncommon at the time. He painted people the way he saw them, instead of the overly tall and boxy people that other artists painted. He created three-dimensional space by using perspective, something that had not been done since Roman times. Finally, he threw out parts of the symbolism associated with medieval painting. For example, at that time the Christ Child was usually drawn as a mature man who was only a baby in size. This symbolized that Christ was wise even though he was young. Instead,Giotto painted the Christ Child as a baby, which emphasized the human relationship between the child and his mother.
The ideas Giotto brought to painting throughout his life revolutionized the art world and made him one of the greatest painters ever.
24.Why does the author mention the fly event in paragraph 1?
A.To prove the pupil outdoes the master.
B.To stress the fly was vividly painted.
C.To relate how Cimabue was tricked.
D.To demonstrate art has no limits.
25.Why did Cimabue decide to instruct Giotto?
A.Giotto would be a helpful assistant.
B.Cimabue desired to rid Giotto of poverty.
C.Giotto badly needed Cimabue’s guidance.
D.Cimabue sensed a great potential in Giotto.
26.What can we learn about art in the Middle Ages in paragraph 3?
A.It lacked innovation. B.It highlighted realism.
C.It bonded well with viewers. D.It underwent great changes.
27.Why did Giotto paint the Christ Child as a baby?
A.To portray people in a realistic way.
B.To try the technique of perspective.
C.To distinguish himself from other painters.
D.D.To bring a sense of symbolism to his painting.
C
There has been a very serious decline(下降) in the numbers of shallow-water fish as a result of overfishing. People still want to eat fish, so the fishing industry must look at other sources, especially the deep waters of the Atlantic. This has resulted in a sharp decline in the numbers of many of the species caught.
Protective measures will have to be put into effect if these deep-sea fish are to survive. Research on five such species shows that numbers have reduced by between 87 percent and 98 percent. This puts them on the list of “extremely endangered”. Many species could well disappear completely if the present trend continues. These are species that have been swimming in our oceans for hundreds of millions of years.
The problem is stressed by the fact that the decline in numbers happened in less than twenty years. Deep-sea fish take a long time to reproduce and normally live for many years. Unfortunately, their reproduction rate is very low. The average size of such fish also declined, with one species showing a 57 percent decline in average size. This is of typical concern, as large fish tend to produce more descendants than small ones.
None of these facts has been taken into consideration by the fishing industry. The deep-sea species have been caught as if they were the fast-breeding(快速繁殖) fish like sardine and herring. It is like killing elephants as if they reproduced at the same rate as rabbits.
The damage done by overfishing goes beyond the sea environment. Millions of people make a living in the fishing industry. Billions of people rely on fish for protein. Measures must be taken to not only preserve ecosystems, but also sustain livelihoods and ensure food security.
28.Why did people start fishing for deep-sea fish?
A.Because deep sea fish tastes better.
B.Because there are not enough fish to eat in the shallow sea.
C.Because technological development makes it easier to catch deep-sea fish.
D.Because water pollution in shallow sea areas is serious.
29.According to paragraph 3, what serious results have been caused by the fishing of deep-sea fish?
A.There are deep-sea fish species that are completely extinct.
B.Deep-sea fish have lost their ability to reproduce.
C.Deep-sea fish reproduce more slowly.
D.The size of deep-sea fish has decreased.
30.What can be inferred from paragraph 4?
A.The fishing industry catches deep-sea fish in a ruinous way.
B.Elephants reproduce at the same rate as rabbits.
C.Sardine and herring are also endangered like deep-sea fish.
D.Elephants are being killed in large numbers.
31.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Fast-breeding fish do not need protection.
B.The decline in deep-sea fish has occurred in the last 20 years.
C.The results of overfishing should be taken seriously.
D.The destruction of the deep-sea environment does not affect human life.
D
A perfectly preserved wreck (沉船) that has lain unnoticed in the icy Baltic Sea for over 500 years has finally been confirmed. The European ship was first observed in 2009,when a sonar (声呐) exploration by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) indicated a large object in the area. However, it was not until early 2019 that researchers from Soton and MMT found evidence of the sunken ship using underwater robotic cameras.
When the team observed the pictures of the 60-foot-long shipwreck, they were surprised to discover it was 99 percent complete. The scientists considered that the wreck’s good condition is due to its place in the Baltic Seabed, where the oxygen levels are low. Oxygen is key to most ocean life’s survival. Therefore, such an environment where the shipwreck stays reduces or completely removes the creatures that feed on rotting wood.
So although this ship is contemporary to the times of Christopher Columbus, it shows a remarkable level of preservation after 500 years at the bottom of the sea. Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz, who led the MMT effort, said, “It’s almost like it sank yesterday. It’s a truly astonishing sight.”
The scientists are unsure what let the ship sink. However, the ship’s guns, which are in their “ready to fire” positions, indicate it may have been the victim of a naval battle. Since the ship dates back to the early 16th century, historians predict it may have sunk during Sweden’s three year independence war with its Danish rulers between 1521 and 1523.Alternatively,it could also have been involved in the border dispute (争端) between Russia and Sweden from 1554 to 1557.
The ship is by far the best-preserved shipwreck ever found from the Age of Exploration, when Europeans explored the world by sea.
What’s more exciting is that the ship is similar to the Pinta and La Nina, which Columbus famously sailed toward North America. The scientists, who continue to observe the shipwreck hope the boat’s design will expose some of the technologies available to the Italian explorer during his 1492 voyage of discovery.
32.What scientific achievement did Soton’s and MMT’s researchers make?
A.Discovering a wreck using sonar. B.Getting the wreck out of icy water.
C.Identifying the object found by SMA. D.Making the ancient wreck well preserved.
33.What can we learn about the place of the sunken ship?
A.It is generally unfit for creatures to live in. B.It is tough for scientists to do research.
C.It contains too many harmful gases. D.It is filled with rotting wood.
34.What did Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz’s words reflect?
A.His curiosity about the time when the ship sank.
B.His amazement at the ship’s previous grandness.
C.His surprise at the wreck’s well-preserved condition.
D.His shock at the sinking of the great European ship.
35.What’s paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The damage to the ship. B.The causes of the ship’s sinking.
C.The construction of the ship. D.The possible function of the ship.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
To hug or not to hug? That’s the question right now. ____36____ Depending on where you live, many of us are vaccinated (打疫苗). But it’s hard to know for sure before you hug whether or not the person you’re leaning into has got vaccinated. Meanwhile, many of us are longing for the warmth of a hug after long stretches of social isolation. Humans biologically need touch, and a good long hug is one of the best ways to get it.
Degge White, a professor at Northern Illinois University, says that our need for a hug goes all the way back to the survival of our species. When we’re born, we can’t care for ourselves and we need to be comfortable with being held in order to survive. ____37____ “When we hug, our brains release oxytocin, the bonding hormone (荷尔蒙), as well as serotonin and endorphins.”
____38____ Because for humans, the security of our small groups and later communities was very important to survival. Close contact helped build civilization. As a result, our brains need each other—and when we miss out, it can have psychological repercussions (心理影响). “When we can’t hug, we don’t get that feeling of good hormones.”
We may not know what we’re getting from greeting our friends and family with a hug; we just enjoy it. ____39____ An air greeting is not enough. Research published in the journal Psychological Science has shown that hugging has a “stress buffering (缓冲)” effect that may even protect us from illness and infections.
Some people grow up in more formal households where hugging isn’t common. Others may experience abuse that makes hugging unpleasant. In both cases, when children don’t experience healthy touch, it can impact their development. Kids who didn’t grow up being held miss out on that sense of safety and protection. They may act out or isolate from those around them. ____40____ Some children may show too much affection, desiring any form of positive attention that they didn’t get at home.
A.In some cases, the opposite may also be true.
B.This bond and sense of community has an important role.
C.We’re in an uncertain place in the world of greetings manner.
D.It isn’t until those experiences are taken away that we feel pain and sadness.
E.When friends reach out in preparation for a hug, they feel hormones increasing.
F.We’re rewarded with a rush of feel-good chemicals that come from a comfortable hug.
G.The lack of touching might imply cold attitudes in interpersonal relationships.

___49___, a storm slowdown is a very real possibility—and it could leave California without enough water to make it through the dry summer. ____50____, when that happens, the state has turned to groundwater stored in natural rock formations deep beneath the earth’s surface. But those ____51____ remain used up after years of drought; restoring them could take years in some places, says Jones.
The quick inrush of water has also created a(n) ____52____ balancing act for water managers. Keeping surface reservoirs (水库) filled to the edge protects against the possibility of a sudden dry spell, but it also
____53____ the risk of flooding if and when future storms hit. To that end, water managers opened the Sacramento Weir floodgates earlier this month to pour reservoir water into nearby fields after ____54____ showed local water levels would likely continue to rise. That’s a calculation that will be made across the state in the coming months.
For now, though, Jones is focused on planning and ensuring the state’s water supply whatever may happen. “We’re halfway through our wettest season, and conditions have been encouraging,” she says. “I would say we’re ____55____ optimistic.”

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin, it might have been “slow”. He didn’t learn his ABCs as fast as other kids. He never came in first in the running races. However, Kevin’s smile was brighter than the sun in June; his heart bigger than the sky. Kevin’s enthusiasm for life spread quickly to others? So when he discovered that the teacher, Randy, was putting together a boys’ basketball team, his mother could only answer, “Yes, you may join.”
Basketball became the center of Kevin’s life. At practice, he worked so hard that you’d have thought he was preparing for the NBA.He liked to stand in a certain spot near the free- throw (罚球) line and shoot baskets. Patiently, he stood there throwing ball after ball after ball, until finally it would get into the basket. “Look at me, Coach!” he’d shout to Randy, jumping up and down, his face just glowing with the excitement of it all. His teammates were also moved by Kevin’s perseverance, and they insisted on practicing with him.
Kevin and his whole team truly loved basketball. But just loving the game doesn’t help you win. More balls fell out of the basket than into it, and the boys lost every game that season by very large scores, except one: the night it snowed and the other team couldn’t make it to the game. At the end of the season, the boys had their last competition. As the last-place team, they drew the unfortunate spot of playing against the first-place team—the tall, undefeated first-place team.
The game went pretty much as expected, and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin’s team stood nearly 30 points behind. At that point, one of Kevin’s teammates called time-out. As he came to the side, Randy couldn’t imagine why the time-out had been called. “Coach,” said the boy. “I know that Kevin has never made a basket. But this is our last game and I think we should let Kevin make a basket to achieve his dream.” With the game completely out of reach, the idea seemed reasonable, so plans were made.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free- throw line and they would give him the ball.

Protect our eyesight
Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of students who become near-sighted, bringing eyesight problems of teenagers to public attention. Therefore, I call on everyone to take effective measures to protect our eyesight.
We can make it a habit to stop for a few minutes during our study and look at distant objects to get regular breaks. Besides, we should keep at least 30 centimeters away from the reading material. Last but not least, whenever signs of eyesight problems occur, consult a doctor immediately.
In these ways, we can protect ourselves from becoming near-sighted.
67.Every time Kevin’s team had the ball, Kevin was to stand in his special spot near the free-throw line and they would give him the ball. Kevin skipped extra high as he went onto the court. His first shot bounced around but missed. The player from the other team swiped the ball and took it down to the other end scoring two more points. At that moment, a clear tension and unease appeared on his face. But quickly he adjusted his mindset and got back into the game. As soon as Kevin’s team had the ball again, they passed it to Kevin who obediently stood in his place. But he missed again.
Kevin missed every chance with this pattern continuing a few more times, and the spectators finally figured out what was happening. Little by little people started to stand up and clap their hands. The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping, hollering, chanting, “Kevin! Kevin!” The whole world was stopped, waiting and wanting for Kevin. Finally, after an infinite amount of tries, the ball took one miraculous bounce and went in. Kevin’s arms shot high into the air and he shouted, “I won! I won!” The clock ticked off the last few seconds and the first-place team remained undefeated. But on that evening, everyone left the game truly feeli
